Tips to save on your gasoline

•  Try the alternatives

For short trips, consider walking, biking or taking public transportation, if available. Join a carpool or vanpool. Telecommute if and when possible.

• Plan ahead to save

Plan your driving and combine several errands into one car trip.

• Drive with a “soft foot”

Wait a few seconds after starting your car, then drive off gently. Avoid sudden starts and stops. Make smooth, gradual lane changes. Build up speed in anticipation of approaching a hill.

• Avoid unnecessary idling

Turn off the car while you wait and restart when you’re ready to go. Idling consumes 1/2 to 1 gallon of gas per hour.

Tips to keep you warm this winter

• Dress warmly

Wear several layers of loose clothing.  Don’t forget hats and mittens.

• Use less water

Avoid leaving the water running when washing dishes by hand.

• Insulate and weatherize

If you need help, call Community Action Program agencies, the Area Agency on Aging, the Public Utility Commission or other agencies. There are many programs designed to help you keep your home warm.

• Stay dry

Damp hair can lead to rapid loss of body heat. Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible.

• Plan one pot meals

Cook casserole meals and cover pots when cooking.

• Check your refrigerator

Make sure the door seal is tight on you refrigerator. Set the temperature at 38 – 40 degrees for the refrigerator and 0 to 5 degrees for the freezer

• Repair leaky hot water faucets

Set the water heater temperature at 120 degrees or less.
