Does your business provide a range of commuter benefits for your employees? If so, your company could be recognized as a "Best Workplace for Commuters" by the US EPA.

1. Transportation is a BIG expense for your employees.
According to the U.S. Census, Maine commuters spend
20% more time commuting to work than they did 10 years ago. At the same
time, employees are spending a bigger chunk of their paycheck on their
commute and less time with their families. Gas, fuel, wear and tear,
maintenance and auto insurance costs are all on the rise. Employer participation
in programs promoting the use of carpools, vanpools and transit all
help employees reduce the cost of their commute.
2. Transportation costs employers too.
Employees' transportation issues can have a greater
impact on the bottom line than most employers realize. Costs range from
employee parking subsidies and maintenance costs for company parking
facilities, to indirect costs that can include lost work time from absenteeism
and increased health care costs.
3. Transportation benefits are a great tool for recruitment
and retention.
With a transportation benefits plan, employers can
expand the pool of eligible applicants for each job opening. By reducing
the cost of their potential commute, carpools and vanpools can make
a job more attractive to a prospective employee.
Carpools, vanpools and transit also broaden your recruitment
market to potential employees who may lack an economical, reliable means
of transportation. In addition, transportation benefits are part of
a solid package of employee benefits that help you invest in and retain
your best workers.
4. Employers and employees can save on taxes.
Another powerful incentive is the Commuter
Choice program, a provision in the IRS tax code that allows employers
to get tax breaks for subsidizing their employees commute to work. Through
the Commuter Choice program, employees also may use pre-tax dollars
to pay for a portion or all of their vanpool or transit commute.
5. Everyone benefits, including your public image.
When employers encourage their employees to make cost-effective
transportation choices, they help the entire community. Participation
in carpools, vanpools and transit reduce traffic congestion on local
roads and preserve the quality of life Mainers value so highly. An employer's
decision to create a transportation benefit package will boost employees'
morale -- and garner the goodwill of their community.
6. GO MAINE is a good deal.
GO MAINE also provides valuable support for your employees
participating in our programs. One big stress-reducer is our Emergency
Ride Home Guarantee. This is how it works: if an employee enrolled
in the employee transportation program misses their carpool, vanpool
or bus ride home for an emergency reason, GO Maine will provide a free
taxi or rental car rideat no cost to the employer.
The Emergency Ride Home benefit can be the deal maker
for a lot of employees who are considering carpooling or vanpooling.
It really takes the risk -- and the stressout of the decision
to save money on their commute.
GO MAINE offers other incentives for your employees,
including monthly prize drawings, an informational web site and on-site
"transportation events" that can get your transportation benefit
program up and running at your work site.
